LOTE French: April Fools’ Day
avril – poisson d’avril (April fools’ Day)
A poisson d’avril is a joke made on April 1st.
Did you know students at this College now don’t need to wear a school uniform? Poisson d’avril! (It’s a joke)
Children in France try to stick a fish picture on their friends’ back. When it is discovered, they shout “Poisson d’avril!”
There are many, many theories as to how this tradition started. Some say that April was a bad month for fishing, or a time when fishing was forbidden. So, to serve fish to eat in April was impossible – it could only be a joke.
